Chinese resident in Australia faces charges with reckless foreign interference offense

(MENAFN) Australian authorities have charged a Chinese national, who is also a permanent resident of Australia, with a “foreign interference” offence, according to a statement released Monday by the Australian Federal Police (AFP) and the Australian Security Intelligence Organization (ASIO).

The woman is accused of covertly collecting information about the Canberra branch of Guan Yin Citta, a Buddhist association, on behalf of China’s Public Security Bureau. Her arrest followed police raids in Canberra on Saturday, conducted by the Counter Foreign Interference Taskforce (CFITF).

She appeared in the ACT Magistrates Court on Monday, facing a charge of “reckless foreign interference,” which carries a maximum prison sentence of 15 years. Authorities also seized several items, including electronic devices, which are now being examined forensically.
